Forensics, are a completely different breed of service, than Data Recovery or Media Conversion services. The Forensic process, is much different than typical disk imaging. With Forensic imaging, every sector on a disk has to be accounted for. Every Block of data needs to be correctly imaged, and recorded into Evidence files, so the data can be used in either Civil Litigation, or many other types of legal cases.
When researching a company to handle your case, its important to understand the Forensic market, and what service offerings are available. In general, there are 2 ways to image your Media. The first option is what most companies offer, its a software based solution, that can image your media. This solution is good, but provides no expertise in the solution, and can't be guaranteed to image every sector on the Hard Drive. In 90% of most Forensic cases, deleted data is also important to proving your case. The software solutions on the market, don't have the capability to work at a hardware level. Every hard drive manufactured is different. All hard drives are manufactured, and packaged with known defects. As your hard drive is used, the defect list grows and grows. Typical hard drives have 2 list, a P-List, and a G-List. These 2 list, hold all sector defects, and new sector allocations for damaged sectors.
In Data Recovery & Forensics, access to these list are critical to providing the highest level of data integrity, and case success. In cases where the hard drive isn't functioning properly, SMART technology, can mark certain sectors as bad, and try to reallocate the data. This results in missing data, software solutions have no way to know, what sectors are available, and only process good sectors. Hard Drives also use Look-Ahead technology, so when a failing hard drive is imaging, the state of the drive will typically get worse as the image is processed. As a result of this failure, the end result is missing data, corrupt files, incomplete meta information and a solution that won't provide accurate case information.
